Primary care physicians are likely to be the first medical professionals to encounter patients with IHD. To reduce the high morbidity and mortality rates associated with IHD, it will be important for PCPs to understand the basic science associated with myocardial ischemia, be aware of current treatment guidelines, and understand the impact of the results of these clinical trials examining the outcomes of IHD treatment interventions. In addition, physicians need to be aware of how these recommendations may be modified for particular subgroups of patients with IHD.
